Blue Stars are some of the oldest breeds of chickens out there. They go by a lot of different names, one being a 'Rock Reds'. They are a great dual-purpose breed that is known for high egg production and friendly behavior. They are generally friendly and docile and can have a variety of mottled to laced appearances on their plumage. They are truly unique all on their own. They are a hybrid chicken generally produced by a Barred Plymouth Rock and Blue Australorp.

They are especially famous for continuing to lay throughout the winter months and more tolerant of weather and disease than other breeds. They are hardier than the Barred Rock or Blue Australorp parents and quite a bit less aggressive. Generally, a Black Star will start laying around 16 weeks of age, but this age can vary depending on the individual chicken.
